TOEFL exam set to undergo major changes from August 2019

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam conducted to measure the English language proficiency of non-native speakers is set to witness significant changes effective from August 2019. In the latest amendment made in the format of TOEFL exams, many noteworthy changes have been introduced.

The changes made have affected the pattern of the TOEFL exam, the time duration of the test, score reporting, the registration process, and marketing scheme. Besides, new features have been introduced for the convenience of the exam takers.

With an aim to enhance the experience of TOEFL aspirant, the Educational Testing Service (ETS), known for conducting the global TOEFL and GRE tests, has introduced the following new measures.

Reduced TOEFL Exam Duration

The most noteworthy change made is that the duration of the exam has been reduced by 30 minutes. Effective from August 2019, the TOEFL exam will be conducted for duration of 3 hours.  The shortened duration of the TOEFL exam will also affect the number of questions in the paper. Therefore, the number of questions in each section – reading, writing, and speaking will be reduced. However, the score scale and quality of the exam will see no difference.

New Exam Format and Marking Scheme for TOEFL

Reading Section: The numbers of questions have been reduced. From 1st August 2019, there will be 10 questions followed by the reading paragraph, which was earlier nearly 12-13.

Listening Section: The lectures have been reduced to 3-4 lectures, from 4-6 lectures. The time duration has also been reduced to 41-57 minutes from 60-90.

Speaking Section: The number of tasks will now be 4, which will be 2 tasks less compared to the previous number of 6 tasks.

Writing Section: No changes have been introduced in the writing section.

My Best Score Feature

A new feature ‘MyBestScore’ has been introduced by TOEFL which will combine test takers’ best scores for each section from all valid TOEFL scores attained in the previous two years. This will enable applicants to showcase their best overall test performance scores in front of universities and colleges.

As the TOEFL score is valid up to 2 years, the ‘My Best Score’ feature will give students an advantage in meeting their best overall test performance to institutions.

Amendment in Exam Registration Process

To improve the test-taking experience of the students, ETS has introduced new registration and account management system TOEFL. The new features will allow users to access and navigate through the website, even if they haven’t made an account on the website. The focus has been laid on making the platform user-friendly and easily accessible.

The TOEFL is a global test accepted in over 150 countries including the UK, United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Thus, the amendments made by the Educational Testing Service will prove beneficial for students looking to study abroad.
