Education New Zealand has announced its first-ever scholarship for Indian students seeking undergraduate education in New Zealand. The New Zealand Excellence Awards undergraduate scholarships package was announced on April 17, 2019, and will be granted to 18 Indian students.
The selected 18 students will receive a scholarship of $10,000 each for the academic expenses of their education in New Zealand. The application for the scholarship is open until June 10, 2019, and the academic session will start from February 2020.
The New Zealand Excellence Awards scholarship is jointly funded by Education New Zealand and Universities of New Zealand. The scholarship will allow students to get admission across the following eight universities in New Zealand:
- Auckland University of Technology
- Lincoln University
- Massey University
- The University of Auckland
- The University of Waikato
- The University of Canterbury
- The University of Otago
- Victoria University of Wellington
Earlier, New Zealand had awarded 100 Indian students with the post-graduate New Zealand Excellence Awards scholarship, which helped them realize their dream of obtaining overseas post-graduation education. The success of the scheme propelled New Zealand Excellence Awards to announce an undergraduate program scholarship for ambitious Indian students.
Students who wish to apply for the New Zealand Excellence Awards scholarship are required to meet the following criteria:
- The student should be an Indian Citizen.
- Should be of minimum 18 years of age at the time of applying.
- Should hold a minimum equivalent GPA of B+ in most recent or highest qualification.
- Should have an admission offer from one of the listed Universities in New Zealand.
New Zealand is emerging as a preferred destination for overseas students and as per QS World Rankings 2019, the above mentioned eight universities of New Zealand come within 3 percent of the top universities across the world. The universities offer excellent academic environment, top-notch teaching methodologies, and a holistic environment for students.
New Zealand’s universities have added one more accredit to their name, i.e. The Economist Intelligence Unit’s ‘Educating for the Future Index’, which has recognized New Zealand’s education system as the best English-speaking education system in the world for two years in a row.
It has been noted that the number of Indians students opting New Zealand for higher education has increased significantly in recent years. In 2018, an increase of 17 percent was registered; whereas, an increase of 43 percent has been reported in the first-time student visas for New Zealand.
Mr. John Laxon, Regional Director Education New Zealand, stated that the increase in the number of Indian students opting to study in New Zealand and success of postgraduate scholarship has paved way for more scholarships for Indian students. He further added that the motive behind awarding these scholarships is to encourage high-achieving Indian students to opt New Zealand as their destination for overseas education.
